SATURDAY 25TH AUGUST

MOCHDRE v CONNAH'S QUAY

Mochdre 1st XI gave themselves a glimmer of hope of avoiding relegation as they overpowered Connah's Quay to win by 149 runs in Saturday's Readers Romida Premier Division fixture. Put in to bat in humid conditions, Mochdre survived the early loss of Gareth Davies to build a solid foundation through skipper Dafydd Rhys, 53, and Steve Jones, 22, together adding 49 for the second wicket. Rhys' half century, the product of two and a half hours of concentration, came off 118 balls, although his dismissal with the total on 114 came at the heart of a middle order collapse which saw his side floundering on 127 for 8. For once th e tail provided a distinct wag, with fireworks from no 8 Oliver Tiernay, 33 off 37 balls, and no 10 Rob Stewart, 31 off 33 balls, in a ninth wicket stand of 56 in just 37 minutes. Kevin Parry, 4 for 52 off 12 overs, and Quay skipper David Jones, 3 for 43 off 13, were the pick of the visitors' bowlers as Mochdre lifted themselves to a respectable 188 all out. Connah's Quay were swept aside by rampant Mochdre bowling, only no 4 Paul Bartlett, 10, reaching double figures, as early wickets tumbled to pacemen Rob Stewart, 3 for 12 off 11, and Gareth Davies, 1 for 9 off 9. Paul Colman snapped up 3 for 5 off 6 with his off-spin, whilst the fast-medium of Phil Leeds, 2 for 4 off 8, was virtually unplayable as the visitors crashed to 39 all out, the last six wickets adding just five runs.
